Social & Emotional Learning

The purpose of our Social, Emotional and Mindfulness philosophy is to provide FKO with a framework for integrating social emotional learning (SEL) skills into programming so that children and staff will learn, practice and model essential life skills that will develop into positive, healthy character traits.

What is SEL?

Social & Emotional Learning

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

CASEL Competencies

A systemic framework

At FKO, we integrate opportunities for SEL throughout all our activities, and we build on the five competency areas of the nationally recognized Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). This includes self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

Positive Behavior Guidance

Proactively guiding kids

FKO uses a Positive Behavior Guidance philosophy to generate a fun and welcoming environment, focused on preventing and reducing negative behavior. Our staff discuss expectations with the kids, and throughout the day, provide positive reinforcement and praise alongside practing reflection, meditation, and breathing.

The Vision

Developing healthy skills

Our SEL vision is that all FKO children will develop healthy social and emotional skills that they need to be successful in everyday life. Our mission is to teach SEL skills to children to help guide them with self-discovery, peace-making, and coping strategies. Mindfulness concepts are also introduced to help increase children’s capacity for self-awareness, self-regulation, and stress reduction.
