At FKO, we understand the vital role OST educators play in children’s development. Each year, children in our programs spend approximately 1,370 hours of learning, exploration, and growth, guided by educators who bring diverse passions and life experiences. These dedicated professionals foster the holistic development of school-age children, offering opportunities for creativity, personal growth, and meaningful engagement.

In 2024, FKO proudly launched Massachusetts’ first registered apprenticeship program for OST educators to create a clear pathway for those committed to making a lasting impact in the lives of children. With a successful first cohort now completed and the program actively running, the apprenticeship continues to strengthen and professionalize the OST workforce within FKO and across the state.

WHY WE DO IT

Vision for OST educators

At FKO, we envision OST educators being fully recognized and valued as essential contributors to the holistic development of school-age children.

By providing OST educators with the support, resources, and recognition they deserve, we can:

· Ensure that OST educators are valued as key drivers of positive social and developmental change.
· Cultivate a workforce that inspires children to explore their potential;
· Strengthen relationships between families, children, and communities;

HOW IT WORKS

Key components

Through an “Earn as you Learn” model, apprentices participate in a one-year program with the following components:

· Related Technical Instruction (RTI) – 150 total hours
· Daily On-the-Job Learning (OJT) – 2,000 total hours
· Monthly Community of Practice
· 1:1 Mentors
· Curriculum Planning Time
· Progressive Wage Increases

2024-2025 Inaugural Class of Apprentices

FKO’s inaugural class of apprentices consists of 25 full-time OST educators, each dedicated to making a lasting impact on the lives of children. This diverse group brings unique experiences, passions, and perspectives, united by their commitment to providing high-quality learning and care in OST settings.
