Yes! FKO welcomes all children in our out-of-school time programs. Prior to enrolling your child, it is asked that you contact the program Site Director or Regional Social Worker to discuss your child’s needs. Together, we will determine if an Afterschool Support Plan is necessary for your child and ensure any accommodations or supports are made available in order for your child to succeed.

First and foremost, your child will have fun! All while exploring new interests, developing positive relationships, and learning new skills – cognitively, socially and emotionally.

FKO’s daily schedule includes a healthy snack or meal, project-based learning and enrichment classes, mindfulness and social-emotional learning activities, active play, and opportunities for homework completion. FKO educators develop caring and supportive relationships with children and partner closely with families, schools, and community organizations to provide individualized learning that helps each child reach his or her full potential.

Program environments are inclusive, with all activities guided by the following five Core Values that emphasize the healthy development of young children:

  • Practice Kindness;
  • Appreciate Differences;
  • Foster Collaboration;
  • Embrace Holistic Learning; and
  • Be Supportive.

FKO programs never exceed a ratio of 1 staff member to 13 students. With extra resources secured by FKO fundraising, this ratio is even lower in many program activities.

FKO’s team of full-time Site Coordinators bring an average of 8 years of experience working directly with school-age youth. Many also hold higher education degrees in fields related to education, special education, and child and youth development.

FKO’s out-of-school time educators bring unique skills capable of fostering children’s learning and healthy development. One of the most vital characteristics our staff can offer is their desire to develop supportive, caring relationships with enrolled children, the key factor research shows is essential to a quality OST program.

FKO takes pride in not only meeting but exceeding state guidelines for basic regulation, safety, training and professional development for all staff. FKO seeks professionals who meet the following qualifications to serve in our OST programs.

All FKO staff comply with EEC background checks to ensure the safety of enrolled children (CORI, SORI, DCF, Fingerprint).

FKO’s philosophy of child behavior education and discipline includes:

  • Positive Behavior Supports
  • An active partnership between FKO, families, and school
  • Clearly communicated, developmentally appropriate lists of expected behaviors
  • Direct, repeated instruction in expected behaviors
  • High-frequency recognition for expected behaviors (verbal description)
  • Targeted intervention/support for chronic behaviors

Our goal is to help children learn to make good choices and to accept responsibility for their actions. This learning requires a consistently supportive and safe environment that models and teaches self-control and a sense of community among students and adults. These lessons will follow them throughout their lives and help them become well-adjusted, moral individuals with a healthy sense of self-worth.
